Casino Payouts Denied

Two men in Manitoba were playing nickel-slot Keno. They matched all the numbers and were promised a payout by the machine of more than $209,000.00 (canadian). The casino who owns the machines refuses to pay them because the machine should not have produced a jackpot higher than $3,000.00.

There's a little sticker on the machine that states "machine malfunction voids all payouts".

The first problem with this story is that two men are playing a nickel slot together. It gets worse because it's nickel slot keno. Even worse than that is that this is canadian money, so we're really talking about 2 1/2 cent slot machine keno. I don't know how things work up there in Canada, but here in the good old US of A, men don't share nickel keno slot machines. It's one of the man-laws - like don't cross your streams, face forward in the urinals, and keep your damn hands off my french fries.

The second and arguably larger problem is that a little sticker would void responsibility for paying the winner of an electronic game of chance. I honestly don't know if there are any federal laws covering this sort of thing, but I just can't even see the possibility that this kind of story would happen in Las Vegas. It has happened at an Indian Reservation Casino in Virginia, where an 11 Million Dollar payout was reduced to less than $1500.00.

It does, however, make gambling online, and gambling in any places outside of large gaming communities (Vegas, Atlantic City, etc.) a bigger risk than you really would give credit for. You might think that table games are more than likely pretty safe, but what sort of problems would the casino be facing if they are not dealing with fair decks, standard dice, or unmodified roulette wheels. In Nevada, the gaming commission would shut a place down in a heartbeat, while the owners would be facing hefty fines and somebody in the place would be looking at jail time. Many online gambling sites are based outside of the US and forcing them to make a large payout would be exceedingly difficult.

Think twice before putting your money down. If you really want to gamble, go to Nevada.
