I went and took another gander at sifr today, which is a pretty cool piece of technology that does font replacement with flash files - allowing for custom fonts in headlines without having to resort to image files. If you've never seen it, you should check it out.
Anyways, before adding yet another set of javascript to my site, and adding flash files to go along with it - thereby increasing my page load times significantly, I thought it would be a good idea to see what fonts actually are available to use, what they look like in various formats, etc.
I created a web page displaying various web design font families that can be safely used. It's a display of what the out of the box options are in dreamweaver, which I figure is a pretty safe bet to work with.
It would be interesting to find out what the most commonly installed fonts are. I have literally hundreds on my machine, if not thousands that are the result of various graphics design applications that I've accumulated over the years. I don't know what most machines come with as a default set, but it has to be more comprehensive than the list that I put together.
I'm not inclined to do much research, however. If anybody out there has any links for me, I'd appreciate them. I have read a few articles over the years that were quite interesting that spelled out such things as - which fonts are appropriate in which situations. Unfortunately, my knowledge retention for that particular set of esoteric data is minimal. Perhaps I'll look it up later, but for now I just wanted to see what I could possibly use in some of my CSS Templates.
