SEO Consulting Firms are abundant these days. You can find them in price ranges that can very from a few dollars to a few hundred thousand or more.
Is what they do so valuable? Yes and No. For an individual or a business that has a profitable product line, hiring a high quality SEO firm can make an incredible difference with the bottom line. SEO Consulting Agencies are the PR Firms of the internet. For informational sites, sites that have dedicated design and SEO staffs, webmasters with multiple sites, and websites that are not generally profit oriented, hiring an SEO Consultant can be a bad financial decision. A better decision would be to learn all that you can about SEO and implement your strategy independently.
You can certainly at that point offload specific tasks to third party vendors - content re-writing, link building, back-end program redesigns, etc. at a much lower overall cost.
Another reason for not hiring an SEO consulting firm is the fact that you usually pay up front without knowing what you are getting in return. The process of vetting out an SEO agency can be so difficult that it may just be easier to learn and implement techniques in-house.
As long as I've been learning about SEO, the top consulting agencies and information resources have changed. There is no common strategy that everyone can agree on as being the most effective, so you are still left with the task of learning what your options are, analyzing the SEO strategies that the agencies would offer you, and then handing over the keys to someone you likely do not know from Adam.
A poor SEO strategy can cause damage - sometimes even permanent damage - to your website. Getting un-banned from a given search engine is never an easy task.
If you are still considering hiring an SEO consultant - ask yourself several questions:
1) Will I allow the consultant to re-build exisitng content on my site?
2) Will I allow the consultant to re-build existing templates on my site?
3) Will I allow the consultant to add a link directory or links page to my site?
4) How will I measure the results?
5) How much of an initial commitment am I going to make? What long term costs am I willing to sustain for continued success?
6) What will happen to my site if I fire the firm or discontinue service? How much of what they do is permanent?
Another way of looking at a consulting firm is just that - consulting. Having somebody in the know perform a site analysis can be a painless, low cost process. Remember though, that there is constant debate in the industry as to which techniques are most effective, important, and even harmful - so seeking multiple opinions from companies with different analysis techniques would be important.
