3d Camera's Better than our eyes
Stanford researches have developed a 3D camera that accurately perceives depth better than the human eye.It has over 12,000 lenses and the most promising use I see is in medical imaging - where a minor error in depth perception could be catastrophic.
How it works
It is interesting in how it works, and once again a new invention proves to us that the rest of the world wasn't thinking very straight to begin with. It's yet another instance of an obvious idea after somebody had the idea. The lenses of the camera capture the image from slightly different and overlapping angles, thereby giving the processing information on how the image changes with a slight change to the perceptual angle. It's small, it doesn't require lasers (therefore it's cheap to build), and it creates some pretty snazzy images - about 140 times more information than what you would see out of your current digital SLR.
